As December draws in and the Cornish coast braces for crisp sea air and cosy winter evenings, there’s no better time to head down to the Rame Peninsula and surrounding Cornwall for a truly festive treat. From artisan fairs to community lights, here are three seasonal events you won’t want to miss – perfect to enjoy if you’re staying at Blue Monkey this winter
Mount Edgcumbe at Christmas
If you love artisan gifts, handmade treats, and cheerful seasonal atmosphere, the annual Christmas fair at Mount Edgcumbe is a must.
Here you’ll find a wide range of artisan stores, ideal for Christmas gifts and local food treasures.
A festive, warm atmosphere at one of Cornwall’s most beautiful park settings making a brilliant backdrop for a winter walk.
Whether you’re looking for thoughtful gifts, a fun family outing, or just want to soak up Cornish Christmas spirit, Mount Edgcumbe has it all.
If you’re planning a stay at the cottage in December, this makes a perfect day trip.
Plymouth Christmas Market
Across the water from Blue Monkey you’ll find the Plymouth Christmas Market.
What to expect:
Leading up to Christmas in November and December, the market fills the Piazza/Armada Way with up to 60-plus decorated wooden chalets offering artisan crafts, bespoke gifts, decorations, jewellery, clothing, and local arts.
Festive street-food stalls and treats: think bratwurst, crepes, international dishes, loaded doughnuts plus a “German Bar” serving warm drinks like Glühwein, mulled cider, and winter cocktails.
Live entertainment throughout the market: community choirs, jazz, acoustic sets, maybe even a big wheel or festive rides (depending on what’s on the program). Great for families or groups.
Free to enter, with card & cash accepted at stalls, and easy access from the city centre or via train (short walk from the main station).
Tip: a visit to Plymouth Christmas Market makes a perfect half-day or full-day trip: shopping, festive food, a city vibe providing a lovely contrast if spent alongside quieter village or coastal days.
New Year!
Pub celebrations: Several pubs in Cawsand and Kingsand host New Year’s Eve celebrations and New Year’s Day events.
Fireworks: Look for local fireworks displays, such as those visible from the Cawsand area or at Looe on the Banjo Pier at midnight
Coastal walks: Take a walk along the South West Coast Path to Rame Head or head to the long sandy beach at Whitsand Bay.
New Year’s Day dip: For a bracing start to the year, join the locals in a traditional New Year’s Day sea swim, a popular activity in Cornwall.
Ongoing Attractions
Wander the villages: Kingsand and Cawsand are known for their colorful cottages, independent gift shops, and waterfront pubs.
Enjoy the beaches: Both villages have sand and shingle beaches. Cawsand Bay is an ideal spot for swimming on calm days.
Explore the local area: Walk to Mount Edgcumbe Country Park for its gardens, craft hub, and views of Plymouth Sound. You can also visit Maker Heights, a creative hub with cafes and studios.
Winter at Blue Monkey Cornwall
After a day of exploring, return to Blue Monkey Cornwall – your home by the sea. Curl up by the wood burning stove, share a bottle of wine while you heat up a meal left in the fridge for you by our local chef.
Winter in Kingsand and Cawsand is calm, beautiful, and just a little bit wild – the perfect place to slow down before the festive season.
